When I received the fellowship, I literally jumped around my living room with joy. It was so exciting, and I was so appreciative. I never actually expected to be shortlisted (let alone receive the fellowship) and was equal parts excited and terrified...
I wanted to explore the dynamic between two deeply flawed characters: one who truly doesn't think she needs help, and the other who believes they can give it.
From the beginning, I distinctly remember getting stuck on how silly I wanted the play to be. I had the intention of it being an earnest piece, and what was coming out was complete lunacy.
I had ample time to write, which was, as it turns out, more intimidating than not having any time to write.... eventually, things fell into place, and I found myself thinking how I can't imagine doing anything else with my life.
Throughout the process, I was struck by how lucky I am to have people like Bridget
O’Brien and Grace Rouvray in my corner. Their guidance —and crucially the generosity of the Katie Lees Foundation and its donors—turned a fleeting idea into something real. It’s a privilege to have this kind of support, and I’m endlessly grateful.
In the future, I think I will learn a lot more by doing a production of “Hair or Death”, but I am appreciative to have some breathing time before launching back in for a rewrite. As Grace Rouvray said, writing is layers, and I think that each layer should be separated by some breathing space.
The love for Katie at the Showcase was so apparent, and the Katie Lees Fellowship is such a lovely way to keep her spirit alive. Thank you for involving me in remembering Katie, and for the generosity of the fellowship. It is not lost on me that Katie would have loved an opportunity like the one her memory has facilitated.
Kim, a bitter therapist, passionately hates his patients.
Unfortunately, due to his poor investing decisions, retirement looms in the distant horizon like the proverbial leprechaun at the end of a rainbow. That is until Mary comes along, an innovative, captivating and delightfully delusional new "client" (read: patient) of Kim's, whose entrepreneurial escapades unexpectedly offer Kim a chance to break free from his frustrations.
