"Being awarded the inaugural Katie Lees Fellowship in 2022 was an incredible honour, and it has had a truly transformative impact on my career.
Prior to the fellowship, I had spent close to ten years fighting what sometimes felt like a losing battle to get my artistic practice and my career moving. I came to KLF with nothing more than an idea that had been quietly brewing in the back of my mind for a couple of years, a little play with a deeply personal story that I thought might resonate with other women in particular.
Within five months, the Katie Lees Fellowship took my little idea from a one-paragraph pitch to a fully-fledged one-woman show ‘Losing It’.
As a direct result of ‘Losing It’ and the Katie Lees Fellowship, I was signed by my very first acting agent. I am auditioning regularly for paid work for the first time in my career.
I was able to pitch ‘Losing It’ to Flightpath Theatre for inclusion as a fully staged production in their 2023 season, and was accepted - it will be back for a season at Flightpath Theatre in November, followed hopefully by a tour to the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2024, a long-cherished bucket list dream of mine.
The biggest benefit, though, has been a newfound confidence and belief in myself as an artist. Having the support of Flightpath and the KLF to see a project through to completion has done wonders for my self-esteem, and has made me feel re-energised to continue my career in this difficult industry.
I’ve made wonderful friends and connections through the process that will continue to serve me well for years to come."
It's the night before her 30th birthday, and Emma is waiting for a Tinder date in the beer garden of the Bank Hotel. He's late. On any other day, she would have bailed ten minutes ago, but Emma's got a very important box to tick before the clock strikes twelve, and Mr February is her last chance.
A script developed through the inaugural Katie Lees Fellowship at Flight Path in 2022, LOSING IT is a tragicomic take on perhaps the last taboo of our post-sexual revolution culture - the later-in-life virgin. Vibrators, vaginismus, sex workers and bad handjobs all make an appearance as Emma embarks on her final attempt to ‘lose it’ before she hits her 30s. We get a window into her relationships, her anxieties, and the weird unspoken question that arises when you reveal you’re a virgin at 29… why?
